On April 19, 2003, the opening ceremony for the Fukuoka i3 Center for Organic Photonics and Electronics Research (i3-OPERA; headed by Chihaya Adachi, the Project Leader of the Center for Organic Photonics and Electronics Research (OPERA)) was held at the center facility located adjacent to Ito Campus.

i3-OPERA was inaugurated through a Fukuoka Prefecture initiative to act as a bridge between academia and industry. It was commissioned to promote the industrialization of organic photonics and electronics―a technical field with great growth potential―and to arrange for the transfer and collaboration of technological innovations between industry, academic, and-government institutions. The research building itself is a two-story reinforced concrete building, with a total floor area of about 1,800 m2. Many people attended the opening ceremony, and were enthusiastic about the center's inauguration.
