On April 4, 2013, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines launched services between Fukuoka, Japan, and Amsterdam, The Netherlands, creating its first regular direct flight to Fukuoka Airport. On this memorable day, Kyushu University president Setsuo Arikawa and KLM Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer (COO) signed an agreement entering each into a partnership with each other.

The objective of this agreement is to provide Kyushu University's students with the opportunity to acquire a broad range of knowledge and education while putting the Netherlands and other European countries into their field of vision. The hope is that they will be able to play a role in maintaining solid relationships between Kyushu, The Netherlands, and Europe as a whole, both while at university and after graduation. Also, another aim of the partnership is to contribute higher quality education for the benefit of both countries.

Specifically, under this agreement, KLM will accept students from Kyushu University for internships, and Kyushu University and KLM will jointly hold competitions seeking research reports from the university's students on topics relating to the Netherlands and Europe.

The term of this agreement is currently set for one year. With the consent of KLM, Kyushu University plans to extend and enhance the agreement, and hopes to further the collaborative relationship with KLM in years to follow.
