The “Japan University Fair in Egypt 2012” was held in Cairo on Thursday, November 1st, 2012 and in Alexandria on Saturday, November 3rd, 2012. A total of 1,885 high school students, university students and parents visited the two venues (Cairo: 1,403, Alexandria: 482).
Fourteen universities from Japan, including Kyushu University, participated in the fair, displaying and distributing brochures and materials. The University of Tsukuba, Kyoto University, Ritsumeikan University and Kyushu University, the Embassy of Japan in Egypt, the Japan Student Services Organization, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the Japan Foundation, the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST), and the Ministry of Higher Education of Egypt all set up booths. Visitors came one after another to the booths to inquire about majors, entrance examinations and support systems, including scholarships.
In two seminar rooms, set up beside the main hall, there were explanations about studying in Japan and scholarship opportunities, as well as mock lectures delivered by  participating universities, which were attended by many enthusiastic students.
This was the first time such a large-scale event on studying in Japan was held in Egypt. Local TV stations and Japanese media organizations based in Egypt came to report on the event, indicating a keen interest.
This fair was conducted as part of the Kyushu University G30 project, and sponsored by the Project for Establishing International University Networks (Global 30), a support project of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Unfortunately the event was postponed over the previous two years due to the unstable political situation in Egypt. Even being the first-time, it achieved much greater success than had been expected, evidence of strong interest among Egyptian students to study in Japan. Kyushu University has already established a Cairo Office in Egypt, which will continue to disseminate and collect information, and host the fair again next year.
