Alien
Registration |
|
In accordance with alien registration
laws, foreigners residing in Japan
must register their place of residence
at their local ward office within
90 days after arrival in the country.
Within 2 to 3 weeks of completing
application procedures, an alien
registration card will be issued,
which must be carried at all times.
When carrying this card, foreign
residents need not carry their
passport. A registration certificate
(fee: 300 yen) can be issued until
the alien registration card is
received to allow the resident
to apply for National Health Insurance
or to open a bank account.
If the resident changes address,
renews their residence period,
or if their alien registration
card is lost or stolen, they must
report to the ward office within
14 days. |

National
Health Insurance |
|
International students who have
acquired einternational studentf
residence status must join the
national health insurance program.
By participating in the national
health insurance plan, only 30%
of any hospital fees incurred
need be paid by the patient. Insurance
premiums must be paid to receive
national health insurance, but
by taking advantage of the medical
fee assistance policy of the national
health insurance plan and the
Japan Student Service Organization,
patients may only be required
to pay 19.5% of the hospital fees.
If personal deductible expenses
for hospital fees at the same
hospital within a month exceed
35,400 yen, this insurance also
provides a 'high medical expense
policy'. This policy refunds the
amount paid above this figure,
and is very helpful when suffering
a major illness or when hospitalized.
Apply for national health insurance
at the ward office or city hall
of your residence. Alien registration
must be completed to qualify for
an application.
The cost of the insurance is based
on your previous yearfs income.
Please contact a representative
of your ward office or city hall
for details. |
