The
Computing and Communications
Center provides high performance
computing resources and
academic databases for university
researchers all over Japan,
supports education within
Kyushu University by providing
PCs and multimedia equipments,
and manages the communications
infrastructure of the university.
The Center is also working
on the digitalization of
academic resources in cooperation
with the University Library.
The Center
is composed of the Research
Division, the Technical
Support Division, and the
Administration Division.
The Research
Division has the following
four sections: |
| |
The
Academic Information
section studies multimedia
academic information.
Research topics include
development and management
of academic information,
education techniques
utilizing multimedia
data, information
ethics and digital
library services. |
The
Multilingual Information
section works on computer
aided instruction
methods for language learning
through multimedia
content. It also studies
efficient archiving
and publication of
multilingual information. |

section studies distributed
computer systems and
computer networks.
This section also
develops efficient
network applications
for education and
research. |
The
Supercomputing section
researches various
areas of high performance
computing including
architectures, operating
systems, compilers,
libraries and visualization
systems. |
|
|
|
| The
facilities of the Center
consist of the following
three systems: |
| |
| Research
Computer System |
Research
computer system consists
of a
supercomputer, a high-performance@computing
server, and a visualization
server. |
| |
Vector-parallel
supercomputer (Fujitsu
VPP5000/64). |
High-Performance
Computing Server (IBM
eServer p5). |
Visualization
server (Compaq GS320). |
|
| |
| The
Center offers services for
professors and graduate
students of universities,
and research staff of academic
institutes. Every user must
apply for an ID to use these
systems. Users can contact
to the Center staff for
more details. |

| Educational
Computer System |
| Educational
Computer System consists
of PC's and UNIX servers.
They are used in information
literacy classes and in
advanced courses. The Center
provides accounts for the
Educational System to all
students. Through these
accounts they can use PC's,
servers, and access the
Internet. |

| Campus
Network System |
| Campus
Network, called KITE (Kyushu
university Integrated information
Transmission Environment),
is the backbone network
of Kyushu University which
connects the main two campuses
(Hakozaki and Ito) at 10Gbps
and connects to other satellite
campuses at 1Gbps. KITE
is the gateway to external
Internet which connects
to SINET and other R&D
networks such as SuperSINET
and JGN, supports the commodity
service for Kyushu University's
members and also provides
advanced network service
such as IPv6. |
