   The Faculty of Dentistry was founded in 1967 as an independent body, superseding the Department of Dentistry and Oral Surgery (founded in 1922) of the Faculty of Medicine. The original Faculty of Dentistry was reorganized in April 2000 into three separate units consisting of the Faculty of Dental Science, the Graduate School of Dental Science and the School of Dentistry.
   The Faculty of Dental Science contains the Department of Dental Science, which consists of four major divisions and two subsidiary divisions. These major divisions are comprised of the Division of Oral Biological Sciences; the Division of Oral Health, Growth and Development; the Division of Oral Rehabilitation; and the Division of Maxillofacial Diagnostic and Surgical Science. The subsidiary divisions contain the Division of Oral Biological Response Research with a visiting professor from abroad and the Division of Oral Health, Technology and Epidemiology with two professors invited from off-campus.
   The Graduate School of Dental Science prepares graduate students for a Ph.D. It contains the Department of Dental Science consisting of seven divisions. All the teaching staff and one affiliated division in the Department of Dentistry, University Hospital, are responsible for instruction at the Graduate School of Dental Science. Students from abroad are enrolling in this program in increasing numbers. The curriculum at the Graduate School leads to a Ph.D. in Dental Science and Clinical
 
Dental Science, or Doctor of Science. In addition to high-level research performance (as required in traditional Ph.D. programs), the Ph.D. in Clinical Dental Science also includes clinical peformance as a prerequisite. In this respect, it is the only officially approved program of this type in Japan.
   The School of Dentistry is responsible for undergraduate dental education, which is provided by selected teaching staff from the Faculty of Dental Science. It contains the Department of Dentistry consisting of Introductory Dentistry, Basic Dental Science, Oral Disease and Pathology, Oral Health Science, and Clinical Dentistry. The undergraduate course aims to help students acquire both knowledge and skills required for independent practice, while also encouraging those interested in pursuing academic careers.
