   The School of Education witnessed steady growth since it founded in 1949 and the first classes began in 1951. In order to carry out its teaching and research activities effectively and efficiently, it is currently divided into two departments: the Science of Education and Educational Psychology.
   The Department of Science of Education is pursuing research and teaching on the foundations of education and schooling in such areas as Philosophy of Education, Comparative Education, Methodology of Education, Sociology of Education, Educational Administration and Social Education. This department is composed of two programs including the International Educational Culture program and Social Educational Planning program. The former intends to educate students with broad knowledge and expertise to enable them to take part in various fields in an era of internationalization. The latter program intends to train individuals who can perform leading roles in the planning and implementation of social and educational plans.
   The Department of Educational Psychology is pursuing research and teaching related to various issues from psychological perspectives in such areas as Developmental Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Social Psychology, Counseling,
  Psychoanalysis, Science of Disabled Children, Lifespan Developmental Psychology and Environmental Psychology. This Department has two programs including Human Behavior and Clinical Psychology. The former program intends to train experts who will be able to cope with problems occurring in today,s changing world based on broad psychological perspectives and knowledge. The latter program intends to train experts who will be able to sympathize with the distressed, or the handicapped, and to help them solve their problems.
   The Graduate School of Human-Environment Studies, as a graduate course, is most related to the School of Education. This graduate school was established in 1998 after the structural change of the Graduate School of Education. In the recent organizational reform of Kyushu Unversity, the Faculty of Human-Environment Studies was created and all staff members of the School of Education have come to belong to this faculty.
   One recent emphasis of the School of Education has been on the international exchange of both staff members and students. At present, 7 international students from 2 countries study in the School of Education.
