The
Faculty of Languages and Cultures
(FLC) pursues a wide range of
research into the languages and
cultures of various regions of
the world. Simultaneously the
faculty seeks to provide students
and staff of Kyushu University
with a consistently high standard
of foreign language education.
The FLC comprises
two research departments: the
Department of Linguistic Science
and the Department of Cultural
Information. The Department of
Linguistic Science (with two specialized
fields of research: Studies in
Language Education and Studies
in Language and Information) aims
at exploring the nature of language
and language information from
a linguistic viewpoint. The Department
of Cultural Information (with
two fields: Studies in Culture
and Media, and Comparative Studies
in Language and Culture) focuses
on the study of cultural activities
performed through a variety of
communication media.
Recently, the
faculty has started exploring
the fields of social development
and international cooperation
by launching research projects
focusing on social issues such
as civic engagement, education,
diversity of languages and cultures,
and social cohesion. This is part
of the efforts of the faculty
to enrich the field of language
and cultural studies and to establish
a comprehensive approach to the
urgent social problems of the
world (particularly those of Asia
and the developing countries.)
The staff of
the FLC research departments also
belong to the Education Division,
comprising the seven departments
of English, German, French, |
|
Spanish, Russian, Chinese,
and Korean. The Education
Division provides education
in both language and culture
with a view to developing
studentsf practical foreign
language skills.
The FLC
is equipped with three CALL-system
rooms and an information
room with networked computers.
The Hakozaki branch of the
FIC, equipped with computers,
audio-visual facilities,
and study materials, provides
language seminars for undergraduates,
graduate students, and university
staff, with the goal of
improving their language
skills and international
awareness. |
