El-Qady : I know knowledge transfer in the science and technology area will be important, but it cannot be a one way knowledge transfer. We have technology and manpower in Egypt, and I believe we have good human resources. We have various geographical environments, upper Egypt, lower Egypt, Cairo, Nile delta, dessert and each has its own problems, such as desertification or climate change. Proposals in such areas will be a good start for new cooperation between Japanese and Egyptians, not only for Egyptians but also for Japanese to increase cooperation with Egypt as well as Africa and Middle East. We have good institutions, good infrastructure and good-willed young people who are willing to do research. So why not use those as a target for our proposal, to train them toward a global standard, and dispatch them to either Egypt or to Japan in order to deepen the relationship with Africa and Middle East. We should do a lot of work in the near future.Ogata : Now this is going to be our last question, do you have a message for Kyushu University students or to the young generation? Can you also tell us your prospects for the future relationship between Kyushu University and Egypt?El-Sharkawi : Yes, my first message will be very personal. I miss Kyushu and I know there is a new campus but I miss the Hakozaki Campus. Next, for the Kyushu University Cairo Office, there is a big opportunity and we need to consider the promotion of Kyushu University and other universities in Egypt. We should not only focus on the student level, but also at the research level, such as cooperation between laboratories in Egypt and Kyushu University to build connections and to think out of the box. We need to think of programs for professors to go teach in Egypt, or Egyptian professor to come to Japan, and to Kyushu University. Kyushu University has several English programs, so why not invite Egyptian professors to come and teach. When this is established, we can send Japanese students to corresponding labs in Egypt to spend a semester or even a year. So Japanese students can go and study with Egyptian professors whom they already know.El-Qady :First, please do not be worried about research cooperation with Egyptian institutions. In Egypt, we have many good candidates for cooperation. Our institutions are ready for international research cooperation and Kyushu University is in a good position with your office in Cairo. So making use of the Cairo office, you should organize “JEN salon” in the area of culture, medicine, or fishery, and maybe even organize a large conference with professors from Kyushu University. The other idea is to increase the current cooperation between Kyushu and other Egyptian institutions beyond the student level. This will be good for Kyushu University as well as for Egyptian institutions. El-Sharkawi : We also need to have research programs, as there is supposed to be a strong relationship between Kyushu University and Cairo University. This will be very important to start deeper cooperation.El-Qady :You can consider this office as a window to Egypt, and as both of us have been to Kyushu University, please make a good use of this office and both of us, to communicate with Egypt at different levels. We will be happy to help.El-Sharkawi : We owe Kyushu University a lot and we feel we need to pay back.10Kyudai News No.24
