In 2011, Kyushu University reached the 100th anniversary of its founding as Kyushu Imperial College in 1911. On May 12, 2012, the university took the first step on its journey into the next 100 years by celebrating its centennial commemorative ceremony.Approximately 1400 people attended the ceremony held in the Memorial Auditorium on Hakozaki Campus, including supporters of the university from its founding to the present, contributors to the centennial celebrations, university graduates, professors emeriti, faculty and students. The ceremony opened with a celebratory performance of “Kyushu University Centennial Overture” by the university’s philharmonic orchestra. President Setsuo Arikawa thanked everyone for their support for the university and then outlined the basic philosophy and objectives for the coming century.The university also celebrated the 100th anniversary of its foundation on Sunday, May 13. Many local residents enjoyed the “Kyushu University Centennial Festival” held on Ito Campus, with a bust of founding the first President Kenjiro Yamakawa unveiled by the invited guests who are associated with the first President.Kyushu UniversityCentennial CelebrationToward the Next 100 years15Kyudai News No.24
