A New Research Center for Particle PhysicsOn October 1, 2012, the Research Center for Advanced Particle Physics (RCAPP) was founded at the Hakozaki campus of Kyushu University. Last July, a new particle believed to be the Higgs boson was discovered at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC), drawing attention to the International Linear Collider (ILC) as the next-generation accelerator. Accordingly, the Kyushu University RCAPP was founded as an international body for research and education in particle physics. The research center has the following three divisions :The department of TeV-scale experimental physics, experimental research in particle physicsCurrently, the members of this division participate in the ATLAS experiment at the CERN/LHC. They operate the ATLAS detector, take experimental data, and analyze the data for physics results, as well as work on the detector upgrade. The department for the promotion of a next-generation accelerator experimentTo promote the ILC as the next-generation accelerator project, this division not only studies on physics at the ILC and detector R & D, but also works on the geological surveys and the science-city initiative, etc. for the construction of the accelerator. The department of TeV-scale theoretical physics, theoretical research in particle physicsCooperating with the experimental divisions, this division studies new theories and models beyond the Standard Model.ATLAS ExperimentAt CERN, which is based in the suburbs of Geneva, Switzerland, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) started full-scale operation in 2010. Its purpose is to explore TeV-scale particle physics by colliding together ultrahigh-energy protons. As part of this work, Kyushu University actively participates in the ATLAS experiment (*1), which is a large-scale international collaboration. Following With a new body for research and education in particle physics founded in October 2012, Kyushu University will undertake a variety of research activities and expects to participate in large international projects.WebsiteKyushu University Research Center for Advanced Particle Physicshttp://rcapp.kyushu-u.ac.jpKyudai News No.2417Particle Physics Research at A new body for research and education in particle physicsGeneva, Switzerland and LHC (located 100 m underground below red circle)Opening ceremony.
