A new facility can been seen on the horizon of Ito Campus at Kyushu University — a stunning, four-story building. In December 2012, the building for the world’s most advanced hydrogen energy research was completed in the center zone of Ito campus and it will contribute to the achievement of green innovation. The International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (I2CNER) project at Kyushu University was awarded in December 2010 as part of the World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI), with the goal of conducting fundamental research for the advancement of low carbon emission and cost-effective energy systems, and improvement of energy efficiency. I2CNER’s research aims to enable a hydrogen powered society and CO2 capture and storage, or the conversion of CO2 to a useful product. Now, over two years later, the new building sits at the heart of Ito campus, a physical symbol of the growth and integration of this WPI base into the Kyushu University system. The north side of the building is home to all the researchers of I2CNER. With abundant space for state of the art laboratories, offices, and meeting facilities, the building is expected to further promote fusion research, which is one of the four pillars of the WPI mission, by bringing all I2CNER researchers together under one roof. The Next-Generation Fuel Cell Research Center (NEXT-FC) is on the south side of the building, which is the core of industry–university collaboration for the development and early implementation of next-generation fuel cells. NEXT-FC aims at the full-scale application of next-generation fuel cells such as “solid oxide fuel cell”, which is one of promising technologies with clean and highly efficient power generation, in order to solve recent energy problems and global warming issues. NEXT-FC is closely collaborating with industries to address various problems and then to achieve high durability, reliability, and performance of fuel cells.Kyudai News No.2423Construction on the World’s Most Advanced Hydrogen Energy Research Facility is CompleteI2CNERNEXT-FC
