Kyushu University California Office (CA Office) was established in April 2004 in San Jose, California. It is headed by the Director, Dr. Masato Matsuo, a graduate of Kyushu University, who has been stationed in the USA for over 30 years as a representative of a Japanese chemical company. The mission described below is a reflection of his ideal and passion for the young generation cultivated during his long stay in the USA. San Jose is the third largest city in the State of California and is known as the capital of Silicon Valley. Silicon Valley is widely considered the most technically innovative area in the world, where the smartest professionals gather from all over the world. The CA Office Mission is to expose Japanese students to different ideas and cultures by bringing them to the USA. It is our belief that Japanese students tend to be confined in a closed society. We believe our mission, sending Japanese students to Silicon Valley to broaden their horizons and widen their world are very important. We encourage them to open themselves up to the global environment and thereby establish themselves in the global community. The CA Office hosts three major programs : a four week English and Entrepreneurship Program (QEEP), a one week Entrepreneurship Program (QREP), and a Distant Lecture Program featuring industry experts and visionaries from Silicon Valley and Tokyo, mainly focusing on innovation and business creations. Among these three programs, the QEEP has especially garnered support from the students and faculties due to its originality and effectiveness. The QEEP has a core intensive English training program. In addition, QEEP has two other unique features. The first feature is an entrepreneurship program which is a combination of lectures by Silicon Valley visionaries and leaders and field trips to local companies and universities. The second feature is a home stay experience that encompasses the entire 4 week period of the program. As a result of these carefully planned programs, we have observed fantastic feedback from the students. Almost all students have told us that their own personal language barrier has come down significantly. Speaking English with confidence has opened their eyes to the possibilities of the world. They learned about differences in compensation and incentives between the US and Japan by interacting directly with some engineers in these companies. They also learned about the essence of innovation and the challenges of overcoming obstacles by visiting technology companies and listening to the lecturers. Finally they learned how to develop relationships with persons of different cultures by being open and honest with their host families. These experiences have led the students to realize the importance and enjoyment of self-establishment, positive thinking, and multi-cultural dealings. More importantly, these experiences have increased their love for their families and for Japan itself. The CA Office is also the one year internship site for administrative staff from Kyushu University. Currently the 5th generation of interns has completed English language training courses, is finishing work on multiple international business opportunities with local universities and vendors, and building professional networks in Silicon Valley.30Kyudai News No.24Kyushu University California OfficeIts Mission and OverviewKyushu University California Office is located on the 4th floorQEEP Field trip to Intel museumQEEP field trip to Google
