El-Sharkawi : I studied Computer Science, at that time it was called Computer Science and Communication Engineering. I studied computer science and database systems, this was my main research area during my time as a Master and Doctor course student.El-Qady : I studied Geophysics, in the Department of Engineering. At that time I studied geophysical data inversion and the interpretation of different applications starting from archaeology, groundwater, and landmines detections. And I spent six years in Kyushu University.Ogata : Why did you choose to study at Kyushu University?El-Sharkawi : I applied for a scholarship to study under Prof. Yahiko Kambayashi who was in Kyoto University and moving to Kyushu University at that time. I was interested in studying with him because he was very well known in his area. He moved to Kyushu so I came to Kyushu University.El-Qady : I got to know 2 professors during my application process, one was Prof. Toru Mogi, now at Hokkaido University, who introduced me to Prof. Keisuke Ushijima whom I followed to Kyushu University. Ogata : What did you like about your student life in Japan while at Kyushu University? El-Sharkawi : My supervisor was a very kind person and I liked him very much. I also learned a lot from him, a real good gentleman. And it’s easy to live in Fukuoka, people are nice and kind, and there was not much traffic. So life in general was very nice. Though, admittedly I did have some ups and downs. I arrived on October 8th, and took the Master’s course entrance exam for foreign students in January. Unfortunately, I didn’t pass the examination. So I decided to take the Master’s course entrance exam for Japanese students. That was in August and it was a tough exam. Exams for foreign6Kyudai News No.24
