El-Sharkawi : Of course I am really happy to be back in Japan after a long time. And I think this is an opportunity to expand a horizon of cooperation between Japan and Egypt.Ogata : Dr. El-Qady, Kyushu University opened the Cairo Office in November 2009 and you were the first Director of the office. What expectations do you have for the office? El-Qady : I think the office is doing a good job, providing information for students and professors who are willing to study in Japan with one of the most international and advanced educational programs. The Office is offering great activities through JEN (Japan Egypt Network)* with its monthly meeting “JEN Salon”. I think they are making good networks with schools, universities. I think the office is doing a great job.Ogata : Thank you very much. We are pleased to receive your generous praise. Now when you moved back to Japan, and during your three years in Japan, what kind of jobs have you been engaged in?El-Sharkawi : This office has three main tasks: culture, education and science. We try to introduce Egyptian culture to Japanese citizens, as well as science and technology, in cooperation with many organizations and foundations. For education, we mainly support Egyptian students studying in Japan and their families, as we have to provide general Egyptian education to Egyptian citizens’ children. Of course the most important task is to foster cooperation between Egypt and Japan. It is really a hard job, and the staff should really be aware of how important this cooperation is for both sides.1,900 young students from Cairo and Alexandria gathered at the “Japan University Fair” organized by Kyushu University in EgyptOgata : As you know, Kyushu University organized a Japan University Fair in Egypt in November 2012, and it attracted 1,900 young students from Cairo and Alexandria. We very much appreciated your cooperation. What were your impressions of the event?El-Sharkawi : It was very good and a big success. It introduced Japanese education to Egyptian students, which is a very important thing to do. It should be repeated several times to introduce the Japanese higher education system to Egyptian students. Students came with their parents, and not only were the students seriously interested, but the parents were interested in sending their children to Japan.El-Qady : I wasn’t there at the site but I saw the fair on Facebook through JEN etc. If we could organize a fair again next year, we will arrange it not only in Cairo but outside Cairo too because students living outside Cairo are looking for opportunities to study in Japan.*JEN : Japan Egypt Network A new network established in February 2010 to activate cultural and academic exchanges, and to strengthen mutual ties between Japan and Egypt. This network consists of the Embassy of Japan in Egypt, the Japanese Foundation Cairo Office, JICA Egypt Office, JSPS Cairo Research Station, Ministry of Education in Egypt and Egyptian Alumni by those who have studied in Japan.
