Dr. Watanabe : The global 30 project will end in March 2014, and we will have a wrap-up symposium in February.Dr. Ogata : In the symposium, we are planning to hold a session called “the voice of students”. We are also thinking that before then we want to have a workshop discussion and seminar among students.Dr. Fujiki : I am looking forward to the symposium. Many universities are sending delegates to talk about selected issues and we will have all sorts of topics to discuss. Regarding internationalization, we had our 100th anniversary two years ago, and our president made a program of “nine commandments” one including internationalization as a top priority. As a trend, Japanese universities are becoming globalized and the government has voiced its support for this. We need to secure more funds to support internationalization. One strand is research-based; we want to be in the top 100 universities. Now Tokyo and Kyoto are the only two such universities in these rankings. To this end, we are trying to make a Kyushu University campus outside the country or laboratories in other countries so we can have a joint program. I2CNER, one of our institutes does cooperate with University of Illinois to run a satellite institute. The second major issue is that of the falling birthrate and ageing society. We now have 19,000 students, of which one quarter will be foreign students in several years. I went to the US for scientic meetings and met many famous professors from Ivy League who recommended that we have 10-year programs, on which most of them want to collaborate. We also look forward to the new 10-year postdoctoral scholars made possible by a change in the law, that will attract international researchers. Today, thank you all very much for coming. It is my rst time to discuss student affairs like this; it was so great to meet you SCIKyu members.Dr. Watanabe : Thank you very much Professor Fujiki for convening this session; it is now time to close the meeting, thank you all for coming and participating in what was a most fruitful discussion.Ekenechukwu : On behalf of SCIKyu, thank you all very much. There are just ve members here today but we hope you can meet all the SCIKyu members on the next occasion. To mark the end of the ve-year Project for Establishing University Network for Internationalization (or better known as the Global 30 Project), the symposium entitled “Internationalizing Japanese Universities: The Global 30 Experience” was held on February 14, 2014 at the Hotel Nikko Fukuoka (Hakata, Fukuoka). The symposium consists, among others, of keynote lectures by President Akira Ninomiya of Hijiyama University and Dr. Jeremy Breaden of Monash University, Australia, and four parallel sessions on different aspects of international education.Representing the entire Kyushu University student body, 13 SCIKyu members actively participated in a parallel session entitled “Internationalization in the Eyes of Students: Voice of Students.” The session drew approximately 100 people interested in nding out what the students have to say about the state of internationalization at Global 30 universities. The day before the symposium, the SCIKyu members also ran a workshop for students from other Global 30 universities to learn from one other about what the internationalization of Japanese universities has brought about. The range of ideas and opinions generated during the workshop were developed into four presentations that were to form the core of the parallel session. These events served as a great opportunity for all participating students to get together, network, and discuss what the internationalization of universities really means.10Kyudai News No.25Global 30 Project Symposium will incorporate the voices of studentsSCIKyu members gathered to prepare for the Global 30 Wrap-up SymposiumGlobal 30 Wrap-up Symposium and Workshop Held
