On October 30, 2013, a ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the integration of Kyushu University and the Kyushu Institute of Design on October 1, 2003, was held at Hotel Nikko Fukuoka, with the participation of around 250 guests.After a performance by the Kyushu University School of Design Philharmonic Orchestra, the ceremony started. President Arikawa expressed his appreciation for the people who devoted efforts to the integration as well as the people who have supported Kyushu University since the integration. He also pledged that the 10th anniversary of the integration will be a stepping stone for Kyushu University to achieve further development. Then, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Hakubun Shimomura, Ryuzo Takiyama, a former president of the Kyushu Institute of Design, and Tisato Kajiyama, a former president of Kyushu University, made congratulatory speeches (Minister Shimomura’s speech was read on his behalf by Mr. Hiroki Toyooka, Director of the National University Corporation Support Division, Higher Education Bureau, MEXT). In addition, a movie produced to mark the 10th anniversary of the integration was shown.Before the anniversary ceremony, Professor Yoichiro Kawaguchi of the University of Tokyo Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies, an alumnus of the Kyushu Institute of Design who was awarded the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon this spring, delivered a speech titled “ Future of Space Molding,” which took the audience into a unique art world.Kyushu University conferred an emeritus doctorate to each of the two professors. One is Professor Jürgen Basedow of the University of Hamburg, who is Director of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, on September 4. Another is to Dr. Friedrich Wagner, who is a professor emeritus at the Max Planck Institute of Plasma Physics and also a professor emeritus at the University of Greifswald on October 8, 2013. Professor Jürgen Basedow, who is a noted expert in international private law, has made remarkable achievements particularly in the eld of international private law related to economic affairs. He has made notable contributions to the educational and research activities of Kyushu University. And he supports the Center for Intellectual Property and Private International Law of Kyushu University. Professor Wagner has made signicant contributions to plasma physics and nuclear fusion research and is one of the most internationally acclaimed researchers in these elds.
