Ekenechukwu : SCIKyu was established in 2011, with the main objectives of contributing to the internationalization of Kyudai (Kyushu University) and improving the lives of students on campus, under the G30* Implementation and Coordination Council, in accordance with Article 15: “Guidelines for the project of establishing networks amongst universities on internationalization of education at Kyushu University.” In 2011, SCIKyu did a study to assess the opinions of students on campus about their lives. This provided new insights on ways of improving campus life of students such as using hiragana instead of kan-ji on notices, encouraging the participation of foreign students in club activities, and other initiatives to foster relationships between foreign and Japanese students. SCIKyu organized activities to meet some of these needs. The Language Program, which was organized in 2012, was attended by 90 students, and we held a camp in 2012 for both Japanese and foreign students. We have learned a lot from our interactions with students in Kyushu University and from our visit to universities in Tokyo also. This year, SCIKyu was subdivided into ve subcommittees, each spearheading at least one of our major assignments this year. Francis : As a representative of the Kyudai-Sai (university festival) Subcommittee, I would like to share some achievements we have made so far. One of the aims of SCIKyu is to involve more international students in festivals. To this end, we collaborated with KUFSA (Kyushu University Foreign Student Association) to pull funds together in order to fully participate in Kyudai-Sai this year. The rst event was classroom presentation of national cultures, histories and traditions of Iran and Thailand, and one on Chinese cuisine. There were also entertaining performances in the classroom like the Wadaiko and African dance time where participants learned simple African dance. There were over 90 participants from 50 countries.Yusuke : On behalf of the leader of the publicity subcommittee who was unable to attend today, I would like to share some thoughts on the activities of the subcommittee. We observed that publicity is very important for reaching out to students to promote SCIKyu activities. So part of our assignment is to promote SCIKyu on Facebook. Our initial 150-strong fan base has now grown to 400, and we continue to use this medium to publicize our activities. Facebook has been very useful for publicity and Kyudai-Sai was a great opportunity for us to promote SCIKyu. While we have 400 fans on Facebook, 345 of these are Japanese students. More international students participate in our events than Japanese students, but, on the other hand, on Facebook the majority are Japanese. We should also produce articles in Japanese aimed at these fans. As well as our online publicity efforts, we plan to use other media like posters, emails and magazines. We hope to get some advice from Professor Fujiki today. We really cherish this opportunity provided by the University to publicize SCIKyu through the Kyudai News.Dr. Fujiki : The publicity division is now expanding, so in the coming scal year the budget will be larger. Publicizing activities is very important, particularly reaching out to other countries. *G30 : The Global 30 Project (G30) has been initiated by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) since 2009. This project seeks to further promote internationalization of academic environment of Japanese universities and acceptance of excellent international students studying in Japan. In this framework, Kyushu University was selected as one of the 13 core universities to be a member of the project.
