15 Kyushu University Birdman Teamwon the 38th Japan InternationalBirdman Rally held on July 25-26th,2015. The team participated in theglider category, where contestantscompete in flight distance, and wonfirst place with a flight of 373.75meters. The team held the record forlongest flight as a student team inthis category, yet this was their 1stvictory that they had been dreamingof achieving. When Iwas a student at Kyushu University, I too participated in this contest threetimes as a member of the Birdman T eam. Working with my teammates to buildour aircraft, make test flights, and then f ly it on the day of the competition ga veme an invaluable experience that still benef its me today in my work as anastronaut. I am sure that experiencing the thrill of designing and making anoriginal glider and the joy of being part of a team will serve all of you well in thefuture, irrespective of the field in which you pursue a career. What you need todo now is to set a new, clear goal and do your utmost to achieve it.O
