16Now in its fifth year, this group wasfounded with the goal of promotingpersonal growth through communitydevelopment. Thinking always aboutwhat they can do as students in thecommunity of Ito, where KyushuUniversity has established its newheadquarters, members undertakecommunity development activities inpartnership with local residents, withthe aim of giving something back tothe community, while achieving thekind of personal growth that is onlypossible here. These activities arenot undertaken and completed bythe students alone, but are carriedout with the support of many localcitizens.iTOP Community Development Group:Finding a Role forStudents in the CommunityProject Kakehashi:Building Bridges betweenKyushu and TohokuIn May 2012, a year after the Gr eatEast Japan Earthquake, ProjectKakehashi was established as areconstruction support group aimingto build bridges between Kyushuand Tohoku. It currently has 20members, including students ofKyushu and Fukuoka universities, aswell as members of the Tohokubranch, who are students who havetaken a leave of absence from theuniversity and are living in theTohoku region at present. Itundertakes a diverse array ofactivities, including the dispatch ofvolunteers to Tohoku (a program inwhich 393 students from 25universities have participated todate), as well as efforts to preventmemories of the disaster fading, anddisaster prevention activities closerto home in Fukuoka.Presentation at University's regular press conferenceMembers of Project Kakehashi Members at the meetingMembers of iTOPCLOSEUP
