The Kyudai Symphony: Echoing Around the Worldtoo far outside the bounds of acceptability, I’d like thepeople around me to act freely. That’s because I myself amsomeone who hates to feel constrained (laughs). However, there’s a difference between freedom and indulgence. It’simportant to achieve a balance in everything. When you were conducting, we rather enjoyed thesight of you looking nervous (laughs). I hope thatyou donOt mind me saying this, but I felt that youOrethe type of leader whom those around him feelthey want to protect. I think that thatOs the essenceof your unique leadership style.I probably am the type who has few enemies. In the game ofGo, which I enjoy playing, I’d rather win by a narrowmargin than achieve an overwhelming victory (laughs). In asociety in which a variety of people coexist in mutualprosperity, isn’t it better for everyone to win a little than forone person to win it all? But a leader still needs to be strict, even while being kind. Without strictness, there’s nokindness, merely indulgence. I myself am prepared to takeultimate responsibility. In Go too, if you’ve read the overallsituation, you won’t lose, even if you allow your opponentto attack. You decide the point up to which you’ll permitthem to attack and then turn up the pressure just at the lastmoment. If you misread the turning point, you’ll lose, butthe way in which you hone your overall strategy is crucial.A year has passed since you took up the post ofpresident. How have you found the last 12months?Until I became president, I’d spent almost all of my time inthe world of medical science and medical care, but over thelast year, I’ve learned a lot about a wide range of otherdisciplines, including engineering, agriculture, physicalscience, law, economics, literature, and design. I’ve also hadmany opportunities to think about collaboration betweenindustry, academia and government, as well as in-depthconsideration of education, looking at how we can nurturestudents to ensure that they become better leaders. Inparticular, I think I’ve developed a stronger desire tocultivate people capable of playing an active role in theirfield worldwide.Ideally,EtheEpresidentEofEaEuniversityshouldEbeElikeEtheEconductorEofEanEorchestra4
