Open Call: The 2nd SDGs Design International Awards

Overcoming the Pandemic, Design for Evolution

The SDGs Design Unit and the Center of Designed Futures at the Kyushu University Faculty of Design held the 1st SDGs Design International Awards last year with 223 entries from 88 universities in 13 countries around the world. Mr. Tang Zhongyu and his team from Zhejiang A&F University won the Grand Prize with their design proposal "EXTENDED ISLAND."

Following the great response from last year, the SDGs Design Unit and Center of Designed Futures have decided to hold the "SDGs Design International Awards 2020" to continue promoting design as a way to create solutions for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This year, the award is focusing on solutions for issues related to the novel coronavirus that has impacted the world under the theme "Overcoming the Pandemic, Design for Evolution." Currently, the spread of the novel coronavirus infection poses a significant challenge to humankind. To overcome this global crisis and pandemic, design innovation is necessary, and the award will recognize outstanding solutions collected from students all over the world.

The award is open for submissions at the SDGs International Design Award website from students all over the world until August 31, 2020. Students, do not miss this opportunity to share your ground-breaking ideas that could change the lifestyle of humankind!


Application Period: May 15, 2020 (Friday) to August 31, 2020 (Monday)

Final Presentation and Award Ceremony: November 10, 2020 (Tuesday) (Tentative)*

* The location will be decided later, depending on the situation of the novel coronavirus.

Message from the SDGs Design Unit Director, Prof. Shigeki Inoue:

I think a phenomenon like this novel coronavirus, which has impacted many people all over the world at the same time, has never been seen before. There are things students can do to address this worldwide challenges, and we hope that this award will help get more students to realize this and to share with the world their ideas that will contribute to overcoming the pandemic.
