[MEXT] Emergency Student Support Handout for Continuing Studies: Second-Round

Dear Students of Kyushu University

 

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has announced (on their website) their collaborative decision with the Japan Student Services Organization, in carrying out the second-round of, “The Emergency Student Support Handout for Continuing Studies”. This project was designed to provide urgent cash support for students who are experiencing heavy distress in continuing their student studies from decreased household and part-time job incomes, due to the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

1) Eligibility

Kyushu University Students, who were severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, are looked at for eligibility. Qualifications include: independent students who pays for school expenses through their part-time jobs and has experienced a significant decrease in their income.

 

Now, it has come to our attention that many students have failed to apply for the first-round of disbursement (deadline: June 10th). Thus, launching a second-round of the Emergency Student Support Handout, will allow students the opportunity to apply for their first time. Please note that students who have ALREADY APPLIED but DID NOT receive a handout payment for the first-round, will NOT BE REQUIRED to submit another application form (the secondary selection process will be conducted based off the contents provided from the first application forms). If you wish to make necessary revisions (to your first-round application) and/or submit additional documents, please refer to 8) of this page.  

*Students who have already applied for the first-round AND have successfully received a handout payment, WILL NOT be eligible for the second-round of handout payments.

 

2) Handout Amount

200,000 yen for students in households exempt from residence tax.

100,000 yen for other students that do not fall under the 200,000 yen criteria.

 

3) Application Period

July 9th (Thursday) 2020 to July 22th (Wednesday) 2020 (17:00 Japan Time)

*Please note that ALL applications after the deadline will NOT be accepted. 

 

4) How to Apply: Email Only

Please use the, “Emergency Student Support Handout for Continuing Studies: Application Guide” below, to study the guidelines associated in the selection process and complete the following [Form 1] and [Form 2] and email the two forms to the submission address by July 20th . In addition, please be sure to use your student email address for your application form to be accepted (the address of the domain is "@s.kyushu-u.ac.jp").

*Please send as many documents as you need, even if they are optional. In addition, if you are a student belonging to a different category than the Japan Student Services Organization Scholarship Category I, and are certifying a tax-exempt household, please be sure to submit the Resident Tax Exemption Certificate for yourself and your guardian, etc. If you cannot submit it due to unavoidable circumstances, please provide details in Form 1, “3. Items to Submit”. In addition, supporters (guardians, etc.) residing outside of Japan and are not subject to resident tax, are NOT considered tax-exempt households.

*Applications will NOT be collected using LINE for the second-round.

 

5) Notification of Payment Status: Second-Round

In an event that you are selected for the support handout, the funds will be transferred directly to your bank account by the Japan Student Services Organization. Please note that any notifications regarding fund transfers will NOT be provided.

6) Notes

・The Emergency Student Support Handout is a project that is instilled within the budget set for each university, thus a handout payment cannot be provided for every eligible applicant. 

・A decrease in remittance and (part-time job) income, are approximate standards in which the applicants are weighed, while comprehensively considering other conditions. Please submit any and all necessary documents to support your case along with submitting the required application form.

・If your application was not selected as a recipient of the student support handout, and therefore not recommended to the Japan Student Services Organization, you will receive a separate notification email.

・Proof material will be requested in an event of any inaccuracies. False statements will result in an immediate refund.

 

7) Additional Notes: 100,000 yen and 200,000 yen

Among the students that have received payments of 100,000 yen from the first-round, and have applied and were awaiting results for the Japan Student Services Organization Scholarship Category, and/or those who are in households exempt from residence tax, that were unable to provide the necessary documents due to the restrictive effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, are under consideration for an additional 100,000 (as they would have been entitled to the full 200,000 yen handout payment). For this reason, further processing and revisions will be considered/made for the students who have received 100,000 yen instead of 200,000 yen. Please attach and email the required documents (such as Scholarship Student ID, Residence Tax Exemption Certificate of yourself and your guardian, etc.) to the following address.

8) Application Revisions and Additional Documents: First-Round Applications

Students who have previously submitted an application form for the first-round of the Emergency Student Support Handout, AND did not receive a handout payment, are eligible to send additional documents/updated application forms to the following address.
*Please note that old application forms/documents will be overwritten (deleted) with the new files that are submitted.
