Greeting from the President

YOICHI SUGIOKA M.D.,Ph.D.

In 1999 Kyushu University celebrated its 88th anniversary. The University's roots, however, go back to 1903 and the Fukuoka Medical College. In 1911, the Medical College incorporated a college of engineering and became Kyushu Imperial University. Since then we have succeeded in maintaining a tradition of excellence by developing outstanding programs, faculty, and other educational and research resources. That is probably the reason why we have attracted 812 international students from 68 countries this year.

A university is a place where human beings search for truth in a diverse field of subjects. I firmly believe that the fundamental goal of a university is to cultivate knowledge, conscience, and courage for the lasting benefit of mankind. Due to this broad scope, the scholars and students who come together at our university must learn from each other -- regardless of nationality, religious beliefs and race in order to better cope with the critical issues confronting the world today.

Just as the contemporary world is now experiencing great changes, so is Kyushu University. In 1991, we decided to move two of our four major campuses to a western suburb of Fukuoka City, where we are planning to build a center of academic excellence which will welcome anyone who aspires to the quest for scientific and artistic progress.

Kyushu University is in the midst of great change in a number of ways. 1997 saw the start of our focus on research-dominant graduate schools and interdisciplinary study. In March of 1998, the construction of our new hospital began. When completed, it will be the largest National University Hospital in Japan, with 1,346 beds. Kyushu University is always ready to offer challenging academic opportunities to anyone worthy of them.

I hope this newsletter provides you with useful and instructive information on what Kyushu University is, where it is going, and how you can best benefit from our various facilities.

I heartily look forward to seeing you on our campuses.
