Fire !

The 5th floor of an eight storied-building fills with smoke. From a window on the floor above, an overseas student cries for help.

This was the scene on 27th February 1999 when eight fire engines and five other vehicles including a ladder truck were called out for a fire drill at the International House of Kyushu University in Kashiihama. For most of the overseas students living there, this was the first time they had ever used a fire extinguisher and they were thrilled at the opportunity to use a high pressure fire hose. They also formed a long line as they waited in turn for rides on the ladder truck with its ladder stretching to a length of more than 30 meters.

It is now fifteen years since the International House was built. This fire drill gave the students a chance to appreciate the danger of fire and the importance of extinguishing any outbreaks of fire at an early stage before they get out of hand.
