19 Kyudai News No.26 On Tuesday, June 24, 2014, aceremony was held at theheadquarters of UniversitySystem of Maryland (USM) (thebody that oversees the stateinstitutions of higher educationin Maryland), to mark the signingof an academic exchangeagreement between KyushuUniversity and the USM. As wellas representatives of bothuniversities, the Governor ofMaryland, the Ambassador ofJapan to the United States, andthe Minister of Education,Culture, Sports, Science andTechnology (MEXT) offered theircongratulations.After the signing ceremony, thePresident of Kyushu Universityvisited University of Maryland,Baltimore County (UMBC) tosign an academic exchangeagreement with UMBC. Inaddition, as well as viewingvarious initiatives beingundertaken by UMBC,representatives of this universityengaged in a lively exchange ofopinions with faculty membersworking in the field ofcybersecurity.The conclusion of thisagreement paves the way for apartnership between theseleading universities in Japan andthe U.S.A., focused on acybersecurity education(Cybersecurity for All) initiativetargeting undergraduatestudents in all fields, the firstinitiative of its kind in Japan.On December 1, 2014, theCyber Security Center (CSC)was established at KyushuUniversity. The CSC is aninstitute for the joint use ofKyushu University, whichundertakescybersecurity-strengtheninginitiatives appropriate to theuniversity in accordance with theCybersecurity Basic Act, whichwas promulgated on November12, 2014. Its goals are toimprove the cybersecurityliteracy of all of the students thatwe send out into society,cultivate cybersecurity expertswho have received a highlyadvanced education, andimplement ongoingcutting-edge, comprehensivecybersecurity research.The CSC opening ceremony washeld on January 21, 2015 atI2CNER Hall, Ito Campus.UMBC representatives Dr. Karl V.Steiner (Vice President forResearch),Dr. Antonio R.Moreira (Vice Provost forAcademic Affairs Dr. Karl V.Steiner (Vice President forResearch),Dr. Antonio R.Moreira (Vice Provost forAcademic Affairs) participatedin the ceremony following aKyushu University Signs Academic Exchange Agreementswith the University of Maryland; CSC Begins OperationsFirst Japanese university to launch cybersecurity educationClose Up 04
