On Thursday, May 22, 2014, a joint ceremony washeld at the SHIIKI HALL on the Ito Campus to markthe opening of the Research Center for PlasmaTurbulence (Director: Sanae Itoh) and the Center ofPlasma Nano-interface Engineering (Director:Masaharu Shiratani).The Research Center for Plasma Turbulence focuseson aspects relating to basic plasma physicalscience, systematically promoting research intoplasma turbulence and systematizing research inthe new field of non-equilibrium science, while theCenter of Plasma Nano-interface Engineeringfocuses on applied plasma physicial science,undertaking cutting-edge research in a wide rangeof applied fields, from state-of-the-art devices tomedical care and agriculture. In the future, it ishoped that these centers will not only produceworld-class research output, but also contribute tosociety through human resource development andother educational activities, as well as pr omotingscience and undertaking academic-industrialcollaboration.The opening ceremony was attended by around 80people, including members of the university, as wellas special guests Shinjiro Komatsu, Director-Generalof the Research Promotion Bureau at MEXT*, AkioKomori, Director-General of the National Institute forFusion Science, and Doctor Emeritus FriedrichWagner, formerly President of the European PhysicalSociety, who all gathered to celebrate the opening ofthese two centers.On Saturday May 24, 2014, the KIKAN EducationInaugural Symposium was held at the SHIIKI HALLon the Ito Campus. This symposium was held tospread the word ? both within the university andoutside it ? and facilitate open discussion of theprinciples and concepts underpinning KIKANEducation, following the launch of this new programat the university in April 2014.Opening remarks by Dr. Arikawa, who was Presidentof Kyushu University at that time, wer e followed by afew words from Daisuke Yoshida, Director-General ofthe Higher Education Bureau at MEXT*, whichsupported the symposium. He said, “Thissymposium is profoundly significant as a means ofinforming society about Kyushu University’spioneering initiative. I have high hopes that KIKANEducation will bear fruit in due course.”There were two keynote speakers: Norihiko Suzuki,President of Akita International University, gave aspeech entitled “Rethinking Universities: Movingfrom a 20th-Century to a 21st-Century Approach,”while the address by Professor Shigeru Miyagawa ofMassachusetts Institute of Technology, was entitled“Opening up Education: What Will Happen?”Setsuo Taniguchi, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Artsand Science, then gave a report entitled “What isKIKAN Education? Aiming to Foster ActiveLearners,” which formed the basis for a paneldiscussion on the subject “Hopes and Prospects forKIKAN Education to Nurture the Next Generation,”which was moderated by Yasuaki Shin’ya, ExecutiveVice Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science.
