The new student dormitories ? Ito Harmony House(capacity: 611 students) and Dormitory III (capacity:136 students), at which international students andJapanese students will live side-by-side at the ItoCampus ? have been completed. Ito Har mony Houseand Dormitory III will be mixed dormitories for bothinternational and Japanese students and it is hopedthat they will (1) serve as a base wher e internationalstudents starting their lives in Japan can becomeaccustomed to the Japanese way of life and interactwith Japanese students; and (2) become venues fora rich variety of cross-cultural exchange andimproving foreign-language communication skills byenabling international students and Japanesestudents to live under the same r oof. Moreover, it ishoped that this will help to cultivate personnel with aglobal outlook.The area of the Ito Campus where the newlycompleted Ito Harmony House and Dormitory III arelocated, along with the existing Dormitory I and II, ispositioned as the university’s Global Zone. KyushuUniversity intends that it should become the venuefor a variety of exchange activities with a distinctlyinternational character, not only for students, butalso for others in the local community.Kyushu University was recently selected forinclusion in the Top Global University Project run byMEXT*. It was categorized as Type A (Top Type),which is the category for universities conductingworld-class education and research that have thepotential to be ranked in the top 100 in the WorldUniversity Rankings.Based on the theme “Establishing the Strategic HubArea for top-global Research and Education,Kyushu University (SHARE-Q),” this university willseek to improve governance and systems forpromoting education, research, andinternationalization, and will take advantage of itsstrengths and characteristic features to makeKyushu University one of the world’s top centers forresearch and education within the next 10 years.Over the next 10 years, it will become a world-classuniversity, with a top global hub campus at whichstudents, staff, and faculty members engage inactive overseas exchanges and which attractsoutstanding talent from across the globe.
