Out-Patient Ward was completed around this time, as wasthe development of the surrounding area, including theunderground passage from the subway and the car park. Insome parts of the hospital, more than a decade has nowpassed since the facilities were completed, so we’ve probablyreached the stage at which we need to replace some of theequipment with new machinery, and I’m sure that will moveforward under the leadership of Dr. Tatsuro Ishibashi, thenew University Hospital Director.D What stands out most clearly among yourmemories of your time as University HospitalDirector?ere was the completion of the new Out-Patient Ward, ofcourse, but there was also an adverse medical event thatoccurred soon after I became director. A patient hadreceived an overdose of an anticancer drug, so I even had togive a press conference. Naturally, we did our utmost toensure that adverse medical events did not occur, but theexperience brought home to me the importance of theresponse after such an incident has actually occurred.Because we took it seriously, we were able to satisfy thepatient’s family.D Now that youOve set to work as president, pleasetell us about the vision that youOve set out forKyushu UniversityOs future.Compared to my role as University Hospital Director, thescale of my work has increased enormously. I believe thatthe most important thing is being able to look at theuniversity as a whole. When I put myself forward for theposition of president, I studied the initiatives beingundertaken by each school, institute, and faculty, includingthose in the ?eld of the humanities, science andengineering, and agriculture. One has to ensure that allschools, institutes, and faculties can develop and grow.Upon my appointment as president, I set out a ?ve-pillarvision for the future (see p.6).In particular, I want the university to help all students“learn about learning and thinking” through KIKANEducation, which was launched in the current academicyear, so that they acquire basic knowledge and skills beforemoving on to study in their majors. In the area of research,we will value free-?owing research activities in individualdisciplines and will support basic research, while alsofostering new academic disciplines. Above all, I want tocreate a university where young researchers who will play aleading role in these disciplines can ?nd the motivation andsupport to move us into the future. In the sphere of healthcare, I want to actively promote the development of basicresearch that will be useful in clinical practice, and toensure that the University Hospital ful?lls its mission bothas a core hospital in Western Japan and as an internationalmedical institution open to the people of Asia. I believethat it’s vital to pursue dialogue with each school, instituteand faculty at all times, while building relationships oftrust to ensure that Kyushu University comes to rankamong the world’s most in?uential universities.Interview with the PresidentWith fellow members of the Go Society, at KyushuUniversity’s Kuju Training Center (Yamanoie) (PresidentKubo is at the center of the front row)B ecoming a universitythat o?ers world-classeducation, research, and health careKyudai News No.26 4
