In June/July of 1998, I was invited by Professor Noboru Fujihara to spend 3 weeks at the Kyushu University as a visiting professor. It was my first visit to Japan, Kyushu Island, Fukuoka City and the Kyushu University. After more than 24 hours of travelling from Wroclaw (Poland), I finally arrived at Fukuoka airport. Since the first minute of my visit to Japan, I was very warmly welcomed by everybody and this lovely atmosphere was surrounding me during my entire stay there.

For most of the time, I spent in the Laboratory of Animal Breeding and Reproduction, Faculty of Agriculture, headed by Professor Noboru Fujihara where I recognized the advanced researches and got familiar with the current research areas, especially concentrated ones around the creation of transgenic animals and in vitro fertilization of mammals, being actually one of the recent most modern trends of investigations in the world. I was also able to familiarize with the excellent and the most modern facilities and equipments used in the researches performed in the laboratory.

As an academic teacher, I have been ravished by a wonderful, friendly, kindly and close relationships between Professor Noboru Fujihara, associate professors Drs. Masa-Aki Hattori, Tomoki Soh and their doctor and master students. Therefore, I did feel like in one great family at any time and any place.

The purpose of this visit to Kyushu University was to have a chance to discuss "The International Cooperative Research Work on Preservation and Utilization of Genetic Resources from Wild and Domestic Animals" which was financially supported by some Private Research Foundation in Japan, headed by Professor Noboru Fujihara. For this reason, I also carried some kinds of materials about these matters from my country. I am very sure that this world - wide research project will be successful in any case. After my return to Poland, Professor Feng, Wenhe, Sichuan University in China, will be coming to Professor Fujihara's laboratory to take part in this big international project.

During my stay there, I visited the University Research Farm and Kuju Agricultural Research Center situated in the lovely part of Japan, very close to the beautiful Mt. Aso and Kuju-Handa Highlands in Kyushu Island. I also had a chance to visit Fukuoka Prefectural Livestock Experiment Station where was closely located to the Dazaifu Shrine. This shrine is very famous for students who are going to take an examination for entering university and senior high school.

My stay , on one hand short and on the other - very fruitful, has left me, besides the research, professional knowledge and inspiration, with unforgettable, magnificent spiritual impressions, especially having visited such miraculous monuments of the ancient Japan as Kyoto, Nara, Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Visiting those places, I have had an opportunity to recognize great friendliness and kindness of the Japanese people that I just met on the streets. They were always ready for a help to me. Of course, I also tried to taste some typical Japanese foods. Although those were completely different from those I was used to have in my country, I could stay for hours in front of the restaurant's windows with fantastic, colorful expressives of enjoyment, being absolutely as fresh foods - plastic dishes, successfully encouraging to eat them.

I was also fascinated with a lot of examples of the most modern achievements of the "futuristic" techniques and technologies in this country, e.g. new Osaka-Kansai Airport, JR station at Kyoto and Fukuoka - Canal City and Fukuoka Tower.

I do hope it was my first but not last visit to Japan, though there is one person who said that there is no back for me. I will never let him to forget me. I wish I could be back there again one day in the near future.

Best regards from Ewa Lukaszewicz, Wroclaw Agricultural University in Poland.
