Outline

The Kyushu University Hospital originated from "Sansei- Kan," a school (Han-Ko) of the Fukuoka Clan (Fukuoka Han) established in 1867 for teaching western medicine. It was established in March 1903, as a hospital attached to the Fukuoka Medical College of Kyoto Imperial University. In April 1911, it was attached to the Medical College of Kyushu Imperial University, and in April 1919, it was renamed the University Hospital attached to the Kyushu Imperial University. After World War II, the Imperial University Statute was revised and the Hospital was reorganized under the new education system. In May 1949, the Hospital was attached to the Faculty of Medicine, Kyushu University.

The Hospital functions as a core medical center; it provides highly integrated examinations and treatment for patients with either complex illnesses or intractable diseases utilizing state-of-the-art facilities. It also boasts a leading faculty of medicine, which enables students to participate actively in the patient care system and continuously contributes significantly to the progress of medical science in Japan.

Confronting the challenges of the 21st century, the Hospital has embarked on a reconstruction program with an emphasis on the following goals; 1) advances in the various areas of specialization through sophisticated basic and clinical research, 2) substantial and continuing support for primary care medicine aimed at facilitating comprehensive medical networks, 3) creation of educational programs incorporating patient treatment for both medical students and post-graduate doctors, 4) strengthening linkages to regional medical facilities and staff, and finally, 5) promotion of internationalization.
