Kyushu University Summer Program --UMAP Leaders Program--

An unprecedented project designed by a Japanese national university

Kyushu University International Student Center convened the 6-week summer program (UMAP Leaders Program) onJuly 2, 2001. This program targets mainly undergraduate students from UMAP (University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific) member countries/territories, and provides them with exceptional study opportunities in the Asian Studies Courses and the Laboratory Work Courses in addition to the Japanese language courses. Reflecting the program theme, "Studying Asia in an era of Information Technology and Globalization", the Asian Studies Courses consisted of seven intensive courses approaching aspects of globalization of Asia and the Pacific from diverse directions. Each course was lectured by an eminent professor invited from overseas university, who leads Asian studies in the world. This year's program was successfully completed on August 10.

Kyushu University Summer Program had another face as the UMAP Leaders Program, which is being endorsed by an international organization, UMAP (University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific). A major goal of the UMAP Leaders Program is to enhance student exchange between UMAP member countries/territories by developing a new credits transfer scheme, with the aim of educating young people in Asia-Pacific to be future leaders in this region. Kyushu University and Tokyo University of Foreign Studies have been taking a leading part in running this pioneer program, although each has been designed separately.

We are all appreciated that there was a good chance to join this UMAP leaders program, and met a lot of top students from the world. In the two weeks, through the discussion with these students, making us more understand other countries' culture and life styles. Besides, in the interaction with students and staff in Kyushu University, we were appreciated of their friendliness and warmth. And in Japanese language course and other Asian courses, we not only acqire the knowledge but also develop the competence of how to acquire the knowledge in the best way on our own. We hope that this UMAP leaders program would be continued. Maybe next time, we can meet these students in Taipei.
