Thirdly, the Kyushu University Presidential Office has managed to take direct control over an annual budget of 200,000,000 for the promotion of interdisciplinary research and education. This has had several benefits over the last five years, particularly as we now have independent control over the internal allocation of these funds. In addition, Kyushu University has decided on a full-scale integration program with the Kyushu Institute of Design. This is part of the ongoing efforts to break down barriers between separate universities and negotiations are now underway to put this merger into effect. We are also taking positive steps to break down barriers between our university and society as a whole by joining together with industry in collaborative research, by admitting mature students and through the open disclosure of information.

Kyushu University's Asia Strategy
As part of our ongoing efforts to break down barriers across international borders, Kyushu University is also promoting a strategy with special emphasis on the region of Asia. The university has already hosted two Conferences of 'Asian University Presidents' in 2000 and 2001, and has actively explored closer links with universities across the region. As a result, the 20 or so universities that took part in these summits have now set up a network to share information and strengthen ties through long-term collaborative research. The third conferences is due to be held in Pusan this year. In addition, Kyushu University has set up a new 'Kyushu University Asian Research Organization' to act as a focal point for the promotion of research on Asia. This is a center for collaborative research together with Asian universities and features not just social sciences, but also scientific areas such as the environment, food supplies, climatology, marine life and epidemic disease. Moreover, in the year 2000, Kyushu established the 'Research Center for Korean Studies' with a grant of $10,000 from the Korean Foundation. This is now Japan's base for research on Korean affairs, and in 2002, the center is due to come under the central jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. In this competitive age there is increasing pressure for universities everywhere to concentrate on their own individual merits. We believe that Kyushu University has risen to this challenge because, seen in comparison with other Japanese national universities, our strategy for 'links with Asia' and 'flexible restructuring' clearly makes Kyushu University unique.

Introducing the New Campus Plans
Kyushu University will commence relocating to a new campus in 2005, starting with the relocation of part of the Engineering Faculty. To let the people of Kyudai know about the relocation, there was a "Kyushu University campus relocation introduction campaign" at each campus of Kyushu University from January 15 to February 22.
At the opening ceremony in the Memorial Auditorium, Dr. Shibata, Vice-President and Chairman of New Campus Planning Committee said, "This March, the improvement of the I st Block will be completed and in April, the construction of the first buildings and infrastructure building will begin. I believe this introduction campaign will give the students and staff of Kyudai much information about the progress of construction and an opportunity to exchange opinions about the campus."
At this venue, VTRs of the ground improvement and symposium about relocation, and displays of the Master Plan, committees' reports, Science City Plans and of various university campuses located in and outside of Japan were presented. Visitors watched these showpieces with interest. The Description of the Reorganization of Kyushu University 1991 .10 Decided on Integrated Move to a New Campus by the Kyushu University Council 1994 . 4 Established the Graduate School of Social and Cultural Studies and the Graduate School of Mathematics 1995 . 3 Decided the eOutline for Reform at Kyushu Universityf at the Kyushu University Council 1996 . 4 Established the Graduate School of Information Science and Electrical Engineering 1997 . 4 Established Vice Presidency Started the New System for Graduate Schools in Medical Sciences and Engineering Established Kyushu University Interdisciplinary Programs in Education and Projects in Research Development 1998 . 5 Started the Kyushu University Council for Promotion of an Academic City Zone Decided on the Preparation of the New Campus Site at the Kyushu University Council . 9 Disclosed the Data Base of Kyushu University Faculty Members on the Home Page .12 Completed Purchasing the Site for the New Campus 1999 . 4 Started the New System of Entrance Examination under the Admission Office administration 2001 . 1 Opened the Research Center for Korean Studies, Kyushu University . 3 Officially released the New Campus Environmental Effect Evaluation . 4 Started the New Graduate and Undergraduate School Organization:Graduate School, Faculty, (Undergraduate) School Completed the Reconstruction of the New System of the Overall Graduate Schools . 6 Started the Engineering Work for Preparing the New Campus Site .10 Established Kyushu University Asian Research Organization .12 Hosted the First Conference of Asian University Presidents 2001 . 3 Decided the New Campus Master Plan at the Kyushu University Council . 4 Started the 21st Century Program for Students .10 Hosted the Second Conference of Asian University Presidents
