On November 21, 2001, an international symposium titled "Globalization and International Business Law - A Japanese Perspective," sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), was held at the International Hall, Kyushu University. The purpose of the symposium was to increase exchange between former and present international students and also other people in the region by inviting former international students of Kyushu University who are now active in their home countries. In addition, through this opportunity we could provide them with the latest information about educational affairs in Japan.
In 1994, Kyushu University's Faculty of Law started a oneyear master's course (LL.M), and since then, more than 80 students have graduated and are playing active roles in legal circles all over the world. For this symposium, we invited 5 former students of this course: Mr. Agustinus Tavip Budisantoso (Indonesia '95-'96), Mr. Viroj Piyawattanametha (Thailand '95-'96), Ms. Jing Gu (China '96-97), Mr. Kwok Wing James Ding (Hong Kong, '96-'97), and Ms. Bettina Stefanie Elben (Germany '97-'98). All are engaged in the legal business of international commerce in government offices, companies, or law offices.
For the Opening Ceremony and following Plenary Session, Professor Masaharu Yanagihara took the chair. After the greeting speeches of President Tisato Kajiyama, Mr. Hiroshi Tsuboi and Ms. Bettina Elben, keynote speeches were given by Mr. Tadashi Yoshino, Associate Professor Masafumi
