Impressive Stay at Kyushu University and Fukuoka
Dr.Esmaeil Farshi Haghro

Recently, I have graduated from the doctoral course of the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Engineering Sciences (IGSES) of the Kyushu University, which is located in Chikushi Campus. I had the opportunity to study in this University for a period of 3.5 years. My impression of Fukuoka is that it is an advanced city and full of hardworking people. I had never visited Japan before neither as a tourist nor a student, and must say that 3.5 years I spent in Fukuoka and Kyushu University were the most rewarding and stimulating ones.

In the first half year I attended an intensive Japanese language course. Besides, taking Japanese language classes, I was able to meet and talk to people of all walks of life. I saw their workplaces, and their places of entertainment. The program of language course arranged by the teachers for the 6 months was absolutely packed with interesting encounters and impressions.

After finishing the language course, I started to study plasma physics as a Ph.D. program, financially supported by Monbusho. The laboratory, where I studied, employs 1 professor, 1 associate professor, 1 postdoctral student, and many graduate students. Professor Kawai provides basic and advanced education sessions for students. Every student can discuss with Professor Kawai freely in any time. The students are very kind and give any help to others especially foreigners. The whole set up was very impressive and the staff are skilled and enthusiastic.

Professor Kawai is a strong scientist, a kind and generous person, completely dedicated to his profession as a scientist and as a teacher in the Department of Advanced Energy Engineering Science in IGSES. He teaches by demonstration and insists on the highest standards in judging the student works. The students fortunate enough to have him as a teacher, will always carry with them a vivid memory of experience. The role of Associate Professor Shinohara in scientific discussion and education sessions is also very important in that laboratory. Associate Professor Shinohara is an extremely sensitive person and ready to offer his assistance in time of need.

Professor K. N. Sato is another person, I must say, that I was greatly impressed with. When I came to Kyushu University in 1998, Professor Sato and I soon became friends, and we remained friends for 3.4 years. He had very important role in my life at Kyushu University and in giving me a Ph.D. degree. He is a masterful scientific teacher in the best sense of the term. The students at the University think Professor Sato as a kind, sensitive, and mindful teacher who, although a hard taskmaster, listens to their problems and offers them professional and helpful advice.

In those years of my study at the Kyushu University, I was most fortunate to be in the company of such devoted teachers and scientists.

Besides the study, the study, the life in Fukuoka is also interesting for me. First of all, it is very interesting that the people here(and probably in Japan) have a strong group spirit. This is called the "nice way" in Japan. Naturally, Japanese can work with a group/unit of one country better than the other country's people do.

Another important factor in Fukuoka when you enter the city is that you will realize how beautiful and clean this city is. You will get used to the dense population, but you will never need to get used to scattered garbage and filth.

Another impression factor is the education policies in kindergartens of the city. All teathers at the kindergarten are kind and educate the children very well. It looks like children are being educated from the earliest possible age as fewer children are being born.

Finally, I and my family were most fortunate to live in Fukuoka and study in Kyushu University in these years.
