ＪＴＷ今年もスタート！

　外国人短期留学コース（JTW：Japan in Today's World Program）が今年もスタ ートしました。第９期となる今回はアジ ア・ヨーロッパ・アメリカと幅広い地域から 28名の学生が参加しています。10月4日 （金）に行われた開講式では、緊張の中に も期待と希望に目を輝かせているJTW生 の様子が印象的でした。また開講式には、 これから日本での生活や勉強など様々な 面にわたってJTW生をサポートしていく チューターの九州大学学生も多く列席し ていました。

　翌週の10月7日（月）と8日には、自然に 囲まれた「壱岐出会いの村」で合宿オリ エンテーションが行われました。ミーテ ィングルームでこれからの日本での生活 などについて説明を受けた後は、みんな でバーベキューをして親睦を深めました。

　10月18日（金）と19日には、第１回目の フィールドスタディーとして佐賀県西松 浦郡西有田町を訪問し、ホームスティや 稲刈りを通じて岳信太郎棚田会の皆さん と交流しました。今回稲刈りをした田ん ぼは、JTW第８期生が苗を植え、UMAP リーダーズプログラム生が夏に除草作業 をしたもので、棚田会の皆さんのご指導 のもと、JTW生は手際よく稲刈り作業を こなしていました。作業の後の懇親会で は棚田会の方々と話が尽きず、再会を約 束して西有田町を後にしました。

　JTW生は今後も九州大学内外の多くの 方々のご協力とご支援に支えられながら、 日本で、そして九州大学で、1年間様々な ことを学び経験していくことになります。 どうぞよろしくお願いします。

Reflections on Japan

The first few weeks living in Japan have been hectic, but enjoyable to say the least. Arriving in the pitch-black night of October 1st, I was amazed to see the numerous neon signs from my taxi ride on the way to my dorm. My first thought was, wow this is NOTHING like Saga. Having lived amidst mountains and rice paddies during a high school summer exchange in Taku, Saga prefecture, seeing the huge buildings of Tenjin and trying to navigate the bus, subway, and train lines was a bit dizzying at first.

One of my more potent impressions of Fukuoka was when I first ate at a YATAI. Being new to the city, I just picked a yatai near Oyafukudori and decided to give it a try. I remember sitting there eating Hakata ramen, listening to the Yatai chef, and the salary men's chatter with the music of Shiina Ringo playing from a radio in the background, and thinking - this is Fukuoka. Moving to a new country can be trying, as one has to start from scratch. Arriving with only the bare essentials, I have spent thousands of yen trying to make my little room feel like 'home'. After buying a TV and a keitai, I finally feel more connected not only to Japan, but also to the rest of the world. I must confess, I am in love with my keitai. Not only can you make calls and do email, but you can take pictures.

Having lived here for about a month I have gotten used to the chimes that sound when you can cross the street and I have a lifetime supply of tissues that businesses hand out on the street. If you ask me, I can even hum the melody of the bells from the nearby elementary school that I hear every morning.

I am beginning to feel at home here and I can successfully navigate the huge department stores. Most of the people I have met here have been very patient and helpful, and for this I am grateful. I am really looking forward to spending a year in Fukuoka.
