100th Anniversary Ceremony

2011 marked the 100th anniversary of the foundation of Kyushu University, and a centennial ceremony was held on May 12 (Sat).


The 1400 participants at the ceremony included Hirofumi Hirano, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, graduates of Kyushu University, emeritus professors, faculty staff and students. At the event, President Arikawa expressed his appreciation for the many people who have supported Kyushu University, and described the university’s achievements of the past 100 years. He also expressed a new resolution by describing a future image for the university and action plans for the next 100 years. Following this, congratulatory addresses were delivered by Hirofumi Hirano, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Junichi Hamada, President of the University of Tokyo, Hiroshi Ogawa, Governor of Fukuoka Prefecture, Shingo Matsuo, Chairman of the Kyushu Economic Federation and Masahiko Okabe, Chairman of the Alumni Association Tokyo Branch.


After the ceremony, Seiji Shinkai, University Professor of the Institute for Advanced Study, delivered a special lecture . Koichi Wakata, an astronaut with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) delivered a speech .


After the ceremony, a grand commemoration reception was held celebrating the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the university.
