Transcultural Exchanges: Mapping Movement of Art, Ideas, and People in Asia

Lecture, etc. Registration closed

In these times of the pandemic, Kyushu University’s School of the Humanities and its International MA Program and Doctorate in the Humanities are venturing to create new platforms for international collaboration and advanced research in the fields of Art History and Asian studies.

The international online symposium Transcultural Exchanges: Mapping Movement of Art, Ideas, and People in Asia explores through two single lectures (January 21 and February 18, 2022) and two days of thematic panels (February12 & 13, 2022) two historical periods of intense interaction in East Asia. We revisit exchanges of people, ideas, and objects during the First (1550–1700) and Second Global Age (1840–1945) with a focus on cultural transfer and communication through visual and material cultures.

Section I (February 12) focuses on artistic and cultural exchanges between Japan and Korea throughout the 20th century, from the colonial period to the postwar era. Panelists explore how cultural production and reception dealt with the complicated geopolitical environment and influenced it. Three sections feature a variety of topics, including tea culture, art collection, art exhibitions, public monuments, paintings, art education. These diverse topics will open discussions on art in relation to border-crossing, the formulation of self/otherness, national/cultural identity, empire, and colonialism.

Section II (February 13) goes back in history turning to Japan’s role in the “First Global Age” (1500s to 1800s). Here, the emphasis lies on transfer and exchange of material objects, artistic styles, manufacturing technologies, and the larger topic of global trade in “export wares.” We are interested in transcultural exchange and its related processes, such as shifting taxonomies and iconographies; translation, interpretation, and appropriation; re-evaluation and reinterpretation; and the construction of social biographies of moving objects.

This conference was organized by the IMAP program of Kyushu University’s Faculty of Humanities. Funding was provided by Kyushu University through a Progress 100 Grant (Research Hub for the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Knowledge RINK), by the Kyushu University Institute for Asian and Oceanian Studies, and a Super Global Grant for University Development (SHARE-Q).
