Regarding New Cases of the New H1N1 Strain of Influenza Confirmed in Fukuoka City
A student of Itazuke Junior High School in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, was confirmed on June 6th as being infected with the new strain of influenza (H1N1). Eight other students are reported to be displaying symptoms of fever.
According to the Fukuoka municipal government, the junior high school will stay closed until June 14th. Investigation of the infection route is currently underway, but secondary infection is considered likely to be taking place in Fukuoka City, since the infected student has not recently visited any countries or prefectures with outbreaks of the new influenza. The municipal government is scheduled to make an announcement on measures to be taken by other schools in the nearby area after gathering and analyzing more information. However, it has already been decided that there will be no cancellations of events in the city. As the Fukuoka municipal government has not requested that any schools be closed, Kyushu University will continue to conduct classes as usual at this point in time.
Students, faculty and staff members living within the school zone of Itazuke Junior High School are requested to take precautions against infection. People with chronic underlying medical conditions (such as diabetes and asthma) are considered at increased risk from serious complications, and are encouraged to take particular care.
1. Individuals or those with family members who have shown symptoms of influenza.
Students, faculty, staff or those with families who display any symptoms of influenza are urged to immediately consult the nearest Fever Consultation Center, and then receive an examination at a designated hospital. Students, faculty and staff who have tested positive for the new influenza virus must report the results to the staff in charge of their faculty.
These same instructions apply to those who have been identified by public health centers or other administrative authorities as having had close contact with infected patients.
2. Individuals traveling abroad or returning home from abroad
We urge that you consider canceling or postponing any trips to countries and regions where the new influenza outbreaks have been confirmed or are suspected, unless the trip is urgent or necessary. If there is an unavoidable reason for the trip, please take preventative measures such as avoiding crowds, wearing a mask, and frequently gargling and washing hands. If you notice any changes in your condition, such as chills, shivering, fever or cough after returning from an affected country or region, please follow the instructions described above (1. Individuals or those with family members who have shown symptoms of influenza).
For seven days after you have departed the affected country or region, please keep records of your body temperature and health condition by filling out the Health Check Sheet.
