Protect Yourself from Pandemic Flu!!!(2)

Dear Parent,

As you may know, the World Health Organization has raised its pandemic alert for swine flu to Phase 5, the second highest level, indicating that there is sustained human to human spread in at least two countries and it believes a global outbreak of the disease is imminent. That means now we have the higher possibility to be infected in Japan.

Kyushu University committee authorized may decide to close all of the university campuses for about 2 weeks should even a single case of confirmed swine flu infection in Japan except Fukuoka be reported. We have advised all students to be sure to follow carefully and completely each of the below guidelines in such an event.

1. Stay at home and do not go out unnecessarily, which increases exposure to others and therefore the risk of becoming infected.

2. Protect yourself from becoming ill and keep up good health habits:  avoid close contact with people; wash your hands often; avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth; get plenty of sleep; be physically active; manage your stress; drink lots of fluids; and eat nutritious foods.

3. Keep two weeks’ worth of emergency food and supplies stored at home.

Examples of food and non-perishables: ready-to-eat canned meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, beans, and soups; protein or fruit bars; dry cereal or granola;  peanut butter or nuts; dried fruit; crackers; bottled juices; bottled water; canned or jarred baby food; pet food.

Examples of medical, health, and emergency supplies: prescribed medical supplies, such as medications, glucose, blood pressure monitoring equipment; soap and water, or alcohol-based (60-95%) hand wash; medicines for fever and pain, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen; stomach remedies; cough and cold medicines; fluids with electrolytes; vitamins; thermometer; flashlight; batteries; portable radio; manual can opener; garbage bags; tissues, toilet paper, disposable diapers.

4. Avoid taking public transportation, which increases exposure to others and therefore the risk of becoming infected.

Parents, thank you for driving your children to and from the University campus. Your cooperation in this is essential and greatly appreciated.

Also please keep yourself updated on information concerning swine flu, by following the news and by checking the University homepage often.
