On April 26, 2014 (Saturday), Kyushu University celebrated SHIIKI HALL’s grand opening with a performance by the Kyushu Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mr. Kazuhiro Koizumi.

The ceremony started with a speech by Kyushu University President Arikawa followed by a flower presentation to Mr. Masakazu Shiiki. A total of 1500 visitors, including local residents and Kyushu University alumni, enjoyed the concert. The program was as follows,

Richard Wagner “Lohengrin” Prelude to Act III,
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky “The Nutcracker” Miniature Overture, Marche, Russian Dance (Trepak), Chinese Dance, Reed-Flutes, Waltz of the Flowers,
Ludwig van Beethoven “The Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67".

SHIIKI HALL was built with funds from a generous donation from Mr. Masakazu Shiiki, the founder of Sanyo Shinpan Finance Co., Ltd., which merged into SMBC Consumer Finance Group. This four-storey circular building houses the main hall, which has a capacity of 3,000 persons, and an administration block. The main hall is primarily used for the University’s formal events but the local community and other members of the public can also use this facility for conferences, lectures, performances, and exhibitions.
