From January 8th to February 8th, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) had called for new proposals of Strategic Information and Communications R&D Promotion Programme (SCOPE) which is one of competitive funds in the information and communication field, and this time 18 programs have been adopted in Japan (34 applications in Japan).

Metamaterial-Inspired Geometry for Wireless Power and Data Transfer to Biomedical Applications
Resonant-type inductive wireless power transfer (WPT) through biological tissues has been conducting to charge the battery or tinny capacitors to realize the battery-free operation of embedded sensors or implantable-medical devices (IMD) such as pacemakers, insulin pumps, drug–delivery system and so on. However, only a small amount of power will transfer through the body as most of the power will be wasted or absorbed at high frequency, and on the other hand, large amount of input power is not allowed due to health issues or SAR regulations. Therefore, to transfer the weak signal though the biological tissues with high efficiency, a novel metamaterial-inspired geometry for wireless power transfer system is proposed.
The accomplishment of such a system not only guarantees high-performance implants for vital signs monitoring, and to build a real-time health monitoring system but also a battery-free operation of many IMDs such as pacemakers will be possible so that no auxiliary surgery is needed for the patients to replace the batteries. Moreover, it will provide the relief of physical strain and economic burden to the patients as well.
