On Friday, December 3, 2021, Kyushu University (Kyushu U) and National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) jointly hosted an online academic forum, “NTNU-KYUSHU Joint Forum.”

The two institutions have been collaborating in many academic fields for a long time, culminating in signing a university-wide collaborative agreement in 2018. One example is Kyushu U students participating in NTNU's intensive Chinese language study programs held annually in March.

The forum began with opening remarks by Kyushu U President Tatsuro Ishibashi and NTNU President Cheng-Chih Wu. They both expressed their gratitude for the long-standing relationship and hope for further collaboration beyond the current pandemic. Following that, Prof. Way-Zen Lee (Department of Chemistry, NTNU) and Prof. Akihito Ozaki (Faculty of Human-Environment Studies, Kyushu U) delivered keynote speeches on their most recent research related to Goal 7 of the Sustainable Development Goals: Affordable and clean energy.

The forum then featured two joint research projects. First, Prof. Edward Vickers (Faculty of Human-Environment Studies, Kyushu U) and Associate Prof. Ann Heylen (International Taiwan Studies Center, NTNU) introduced their collaborative study on East Asian popular culture. Second, Assistant Prof. Chun-Chieh Chang (Institute of Electro-Optical Engineering, NTNU) presented research he conducted with Prof. Kaoru Tamada (Institute for Materials Chemistry and Engineering, Kyushu U). In the parallel discussion sessions, each participant chose one of the three topics; 'Science-related issues,' 'COIL & online education,' 'Mathematics for Industry,' and exchanged opinions.

Lastly, Executive Vice Presidents Prof. Frank Yung-Hsiang Yin (NTNU) and Prof. Toshiyuki Kono (Kyushu U) delivered closing remarks, extending their heartfelt appreciation to all attendees and organizers.

With more than 80 attendees, this academic forum was a great success. Kyushu U will continue to collaborate with NTNU in a variety of ways.

The program for the day can be viewed here.
