Sponsored by the International Society for Teaching Debate (ISTD) and co-sponsored by Kyushu University’s Faculty of Languages and Cultures as well as the Japan Debate Association (JDA) Kyushu Chapter, the 8th International Conference on Debate and Argumentation Education was held online on March 5 and 6, 2022. A total of 39 participants from Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, the Netherlands, and the US joined the conference to discuss the latest developments in debate education.

The ISTD is the only international academic organization located in Japan that specializes in debate education. This year’s annual conference provided a valuable opportunity for researchers as well as high school teachers to exchange opinions on the teaching methods of debate, which is introduced in the MEXT’s Courses of Study for High Schools starting this April.

On the second day, Professor Joseph Zompetti of Illinois State University gave a keynote speech (Title: Argument in a Fake News World), followed by three presentations in English, and participants commented that it was inspiring to learn about the latest activities from overseas.

The International Society for Teaching Debate is planning various activities to promote debate education in cooperation with Kyushu University's Faculty of Languages and Cultures. For more details, please visit the following websites:
