Kyushu U's 3MT Competition winners, judges and a faculty advisor

On Tuesday, September 27, 2022, the award ceremony for the Kyushu U 3MT Competition 2022 was held at Shiiki Hall, Ito Campus.

This was the second time Kyushu University held its 3MT competition, a local version of an international competition for doctoral students to present their research focus in just three minutes with only one slide. It started in 2008 at our partner institution The University of Queensland in Australia and has become a well-known and highly regarded competition.

This year, 20 students from 10 graduate schools participated. Fourteen students who made it through the first round of the competition advanced to the online final on Tuesday, July 26.

In addition to three professors from Kyushu University, four outside representatives were invited to join the judging panel, including Mr. Trevor Holloway, Consul General, Australian Consulate-General Osaka; Professor Lydia Kavanagh, The University of Queensland; Mr. Yasufumi Hirai, Group EVP, CIO & CISO, Rakuten Group, Inc.; and Ms. Mitsuyo Utsugi, Nature Digest Managing Editor at Nature Research. After a rigorous screening process, the judging panel selected three award winners for the competition.

During the Q&A session, the judging panel gave many thought-provoking comments based on their own experiences, and it was a truly valuable opportunity for the students. The students and judging panel wish to hold the event again next year and beyond.

Our overall winner, Ms. Marly Orrego Morales, participated in the Virtual Asia-Pacific Competition: 2022 Asia-Pacific 3MT Semi-Final Showcase hosted by The University of Queensland as Kyushu University’s representative.
