Kyushu University (Kyushu U) and its longstanding partner, Seoul National University (SNU), co-organized "The 4th SNU-Kyushu U Joint Symposium", which was hosted at SNU Gwanak Campus on September 14, 2023.
In November 2019, the two universities agreed to strengthen their connection as crucial partners by holding an annual joint symposium. The first symposium was held online in September 2020, the second online in June 2021, and the third on-site for the first time in September 2022.
The day before the symposium, the Presidents and other executives of the two universities had a meeting with a vibrant exchange of ideas for further future collaborations. More than 60 participants attended the fourth symposium this year, making it an important opportunity to deepen exchanges between the two universities.
The symposium began with welcome remarks by SNU Executive Vice President and Dean of Graduate School Seong Kyu, Kim, followed by congratulatory remarks by Kyushu U President Tatsuro Ishibashi, expressing their desires for further development of exchange between the two universities.
A prominent researcher from each university gave a keynote lecture, under the theme of "Navigating the AI Frontier: A Collaboration". Distinguished Professor Sungroh Yoon from SNU gave a lecture titled "AI: The Current State of the Art and Collaboration Frontiers", while Associate Professor Danilo Vasconcellos Vargas from Kyushu U spoke about "Unleashing Intelligence: Exploring New Horizons for Natural and Synthetic Minds".
In the afternoon of the same day, three satellite sessions were held, organized by researchers from SNU and Kyushu U.
A staff exchange session was also held at the same time as the satellite sessions. After splitting into two groups, International Affairs staff members from Kyushu U and SNU gave presentations based on two topics: International Education/Partnership and International Scholarships. The participating staff members broadened their perspectives on global university management by exchanging information. They discussed ideas for process improvement and problem-solving and reaffirmed their commitment to future collaboration.
The two universities agreed to hold the 5th SNU-Kyushu U Joint Symposium in 2024, which will be hosted by Kyushu U.
