The US is pressing Europe and Asia for increased burden sharing – geopolitics trumps geoeconomics, a new focus on defence and deterrence has become necessary. The latest world view expressed in the US National Security Strategy signals the transformation (or even end) of the transatlantic relationship, with repercussions on the transpacific theatre. The EU needs to work with partners to avoid a G2, a bifurcation of the international order in spheres of influence where might is right – the post-World War II system is contested and thereby the EU which was set up to preserve peace and not to escrow anybody. |
