Policy and procedures for classes and end-of-semester examinations in the event of natural disasters

When access to campus is deemed dangerous due to natural disasters or similar emergencies, the conduct of classes and end-of-semester examinations (hereinafter collectively referred to as "classes") shall be as follows.

1. University-wide decision on the suspension of in-person classes

If emergency or weather warnings (hereinafter referred to as “warnings”) are issued for Fukuoka City, Itoshima City, or Kasuga City, the Executive Vice President for Education will decide whether to suspend in-person classes under either of the following conditions:

(1) Access to campus is deemed dangerous.

(2) Commuting is expected to be difficult due to significant delays or suspension of public transportation.

  • Timing of the decision: In principle, the decision will be made and announced by 4:00 p.m. on the previous day.
  • Scope: In-person classes at all campuses (including online classes taken on campus).

Online classes may be conducted if the safety of all students, faculty, and staff can be ensured.
For classes held on days not listed in the university-wide academic calendar, please follow the instructions of the relevant school or graduate school.

2. Implementation of classes and student responsibilities

If classes are suspended
  • Do not enter any campus.
  • Follow notifications from the relevant school or graduate school for details of class cancellations or the transition to online classes.
If classes are held
  • In principle, classes will be conducted as scheduled.
  • If conditions worsen, classes may be canceled or conducted online, depending on the discretion of the relevant school or graduate school. In some cases, this decision may be made early in the morning of the day concerned, around 6:30 a.m.
  • Taking into account the issuance of warnings at the student’s place of residence, the extent of damage, and the operating status of public transportation, students should assess their own safety and commuting conditions.
  • If a student determines that their personal safety may be at risk or that commuting to campus would be difficult, the student should prioritize their safety and refrain from attending classes. (Such cases will be eligible for special consideration.)
If warnings are issued after classes have started,

Classes may be suspended mid-session or shifted to online classes at the discretion of the relevant school or graduate school. Please promptly follow instructions from the relevant school or graduate school.

3. How decisions will be announced

4. Notes

  • Special consideration will be given to students who are absent or late due to warnings or transportation conditions, provided they inform their course instructor.
  • This policy may not apply to off-campus, practical, or clinical training. Please follow the instructions from the course instructor.
  • Information on evacuation sites will be provided separately if returning home becomes difficult.
