| Event details | Raffaele PERNICE PhD, EU Architect 2026 JSPS BRIDGE Fellow - Kyushu University, Fukuoka Senior Lecturer in Architecture and Urbanism University of New South Wales, Sydney In the last few years, a successful and solid academic collaboration has been forged between UNSW Sydney in Australia and Waseda University in Japan. Through a combined series of multi-disciplinary activities involving teaching, research and the management of international events, both institutions have progressed a common agenda regarding the study and analysis of the transformation of the built environment with a specific focus on the challenges faced by Australian and Japanese cities. In addition to purely joint research programs, various teaching projects have also been developed at undergraduate and postgraduate level with the aims at enhancing students' understanding of contemporary city-making in an international context, covering a breadth of critical architectural, urban design and city planning threats and opportunities for a more sustainable urban development. In these teaching activities the Australian students are exposed to different perspectives and alternative methodological approaches while cooperating with their Japanese counterparts, with mutual benefit in terms of exchange of knowledge and personal interactions. The presentation will outline some of the most relevant examples of this rewarding collaboration, from its incipit in 2021 with an international symposium to the most recent joint design studio organized in Tokyo in December 2025. |
