Shinichiro Ito, who is in his second year on the master’s program in the Graduate School of Design’s Department of Design Strategy, received the Best Design Case Award for a project showcasing a product called PosturAroma at the 9th International Conference on Design & Emotion 2014, which was held in Colombia from Monday 6 to Friday 10 October, 2014 (*1).
PosturAroma is a wearable device (*2) in the form of a necklace that promotes a psychological sense of safety, which Mr. Ito designed with Marco van Hout, Laura Mul, and Loes Bogers when participating in a project focused on women’s safety while he was an international student at MediaLAB Amsterdam (Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Netherlands). Focusing on the effect of smell on emotion and the way that good posture can create a sense of confidence, this device promotes a sense of safety by encouraging the wearer to stand up straight, thereby increasing her confidence. When the wearer is slouching, a pleasant scent is emitted that acts as feedback for the wearer, reminding her to stand up straight and thereby making her feel safer.
It is hoped that this wearable device will eliminate women’s sense of anxiety in the following ways when walking alone, thereby contributing to their safety.

●As poor posture can make someone look as though they lack confidence, improving posture can eliminate anxieties about the risk of attack when there is someone else nearby
●The fragrance itself also dispels the sense of anxiety
Receiving the award, Mr. Ito said, “I’m delighted that this design tackling the social issue of women’s safety has been recognized in this way.”
